Amazon Kindle: Importance of @free.kindle.com
Do you have a document in PDF format and want to read it on the Kindle? Email the file to @free.kindle.com and the Kindle team will convert the file for free. You do not need to pay for this service.
The Gizmo Report writes a glowing article about his 8-day experience with the Kindle. The comparison between the Sony Reader in speed is important for individuals who reported the experience was slow. It is all relative.
A major draw back "is a purchased Kindle book can't be opened in any software on a Mac or PC. That's a major pain."
Yes, a major pain.

People can also do this themselves by downloading the free Mobipocket Creator software which will convert pdf's into DRM-free prc files which the Kindle natively supports.

How long does it take to convert a file, from the time you send it until it comes back to your computer? Hours? Days?

The fastest way is to convert the document yourself. I used the Mobipocket Creator to convert a 338 page document. I started at 7:30 and had it on the Kindle by 8:00. This included downloading the software, installing it, and hooking up the Kindle.
